Are Games Coming In Pairs?

twins

Am I seeing double? Are games becoming incredibly similar recently? It seems like every time I hear or read about a new game, another game is announced with similar characteristics. Although each game is classified as an “original” idea, one can’t help but think of a similar game coming out around the same time. Let’s take a look at some case and point examples.

The first game that comes to mind is the likeness of InFamous and Prototype. Both take place in a massive city area, involving a sought after, on the run male character with special abilities. While the story for each game is different, the appearance of the games have a striking resemblance. The games even have a close release date within the May/June months. I can predict a lot of review comparisons already.

Another double take I found were the games Bayonetta and WET. The games feature a gun-toting bad-ass female lead character a la Lara Croft. Now, I’ll admit for this one, the games look obscure from each other but the female leads just make me remind of one another. Bayonetta looks like DMC4 and WET is a combo of Tomb Raider and Max Payne but I still get a similar vibe when I think about it. Still can’t go wrong with a hellbent sexy female lead character though.

The last example I’ll use is an obvious one, DJ Hero and Scratch: The Ultimate DJ. Much like Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band, these two DJ games are in direct relation. Go on a tour, hit the correct buttons for “beats”, and rake in points and money to open up more venues. I’m not sure when both games are being released but it wouldn’t surprised if the dates were close to each other.

So what games have you seen that remind you of another game? How close were they in launch comparison? Do you see any new games coming out that have similar characteristics? Discuss in the comments below.

I think you are right. Too many games this generation seem like copies of something else. Perhaps the creative wheel has stopped spinning with developers. One of the other problems I have seen in sequels that are just copies of the original. Creativity definitely seems to be lacking these days. We are seeing better graphics, better online play, but actual uniqueness rarely exists.
