Following my previous post of the Top 5 Hardest RPG’s I Have Played (here), I decided to list my Top 10 Most Fun RPG’s. This isn’t my favorite RPG list, just the ones I had the most fun with. They are placed in order when they launched, starting from newest to oldest. Just to emphasize again, this is a list of RPG’s I had the most fun playing, not a “this is better than that” list. Without further ado!
#10 - Valkyria Chronicles, 2008, PlayStation 3

One of the most unique and interesting strategy based RPG’s I have played. It’s story and gameplay make it stand out. Its uniqueness make this game really addicting and fun to play. If you own a PS3, you need to reward yourself and get this. While frustrating at times, the game will pull you in and you can really enjoy yourself during the battles.
#9 - Fable 2, 2008, Xbox360

The reason I had so much fun with this game because my girlfriend was really into it. She was able to jump in easily and loved every minute of playing. Although she played a majority of the game, it was fun to watch and help her with quests and collecting the silver keys, gargoyles, etc. Although the main story and first expansion (Knothole Island) are finished, we are both looking forward the new expansion in May.
#8 - Final Fantasy 5, 1999, PlayStation

Although most people will argue with this, I had the most fun with Final Fantasy 5. When it was finally released on the PlayStation, I enjoyed every moment of the game. The advanced job class system, the story, gameplay; everything was spot on. All those elements made this game extremely fun to play. While there may be better Final Fantasy games released, FF5 will always stand out to me.
#7 - Wild Arms, 1997, PlayStation

I thought this game started out pretty fun where you had each of the 3 main characters played seperately, eventually meeting after each part was finished. I had so much fun with this game that after I beat it, I played it again. I had a line of friends waiting to get into this game when I was done. Plus this game has one of the best location names ever; Ka Dingle.
#6 - Suikoden, 1996, PlayStation

Another one of those RPG’s I can never get tired of playing. The Runes, 108 Stars, the war battles; everything was so enjoyable. Suikoden II was equally as fun but Suikoden started it all. This was another one of the RPG’s I could start a new game after completing my previous one. Not only one of my most fun RPG’s but one of my all time favorite games ever.
#5 - Dragon Force, 1996, Sega Saturn

If you missed this game, you missed out on some great RPG fun. You picked your general to control and sent your massive forces out to conquer other kingdoms. All battles were large scaled, up close, pitting hundreds of troops from both sides into chaotic fights. It boiled down to a “rock, scissors, paper” type of battle where certain troops would shred through others. This caused the gameplay and your strategy to change constantly so the game always kept you thinking while keeping it fun.
#4 - Super Mario RPG, 1996, Super Nintendo

While a little quirky, this game was really fun to play. It introduced a few new characters into the Mario world, one I even based an old AOL screen name after. (Mallow, not Geno, bet you didn’t see that coming) While the game didn’t change anything to the RPG genre, it was awesome and fun to play as Mario, Browser, and the rest of the cast in this type of element.
#3 - Shining Force 2, 1994, Sega Genesis

While Shining Force was the pioneer game, Shining Force 2 really stood out for me more. My friends and I were so excited when this game came out. We’d alternate battles so everyone could get into the action. We even skipped school, stay over someone’s house, and played all day. Aside from the main character, we overbuffed Slade the Ninja Rat and Peter the Phoenix to the extreme.
#2 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, 1993, Super Nintendo

Sorry to all the Ocarina of Time fans. I did enjoy Ocarina of Time very much but A Link to the Past was so much fun. At the time, the game was so massive to us. My friends and I would be all over Hyrule trying to figure out where to go next. The dungeons and bosses were fun and exciting as well. As much of a fan of Ocarina of Time that I am, I think because I played A Link to the Past with friends, I found it more fun.
#1 - Phantasy Star II, 1990, Sega Genesis

Phantasy Star II was mentioned in my Top 5 Hardest RPG’s post but if you remember, I stated I had a love/hate relationship with this game. It required a lot of patience but I really had a blast playing, getting lost, escaping, and restarting dungeons. Granted, it was also a pain in the ass but regardless, still fun.
A few honorable mentions - Chrono Trigger, Legend of Dragoon, Guardian Heroes, Alundra. Became hard to decide the Top 10 but wanted to mention these games. The deciding faction was that I played the other RPG’s with friends or family and upped the fun factor for me.
So that rounds out my Top 10 Most Fun RPG’s I Have Played. I’d like to state once more that this isn’t a list of what RPG is better than others, just a Top 10 based on fun factor for me. What does your list look like, match any of mine? Match none of mine? Share your own fun experiences and games in the comments.

Ya, I did say that Valkyria Chronicles was frustrating at times. And sorry, never played Skies of Arcadia, unless you have it and want to send it my way =P
