iPhone, The Gaming Device
Posted by Carlos Macias in RSS, Uncategorized on June 19th, 2009
Apple’s iPhone is a video player. A convenient way to download podcasts at the touch of a button. A media player subject to the owner’s “taste in music.” An ebook reader that lets you catch up on literature you’ve missed. And especially, much to the chagrin of many a hardcore player, a gaming device.
The iPhone is the most accessible platform to develop for and play on. Sure, it has its share of crap overflow but what traditional system doesn’t?
Even if Apple doesn’t want to recognize it as such, it has become a, potentially, capital thorn to the DS’ dominance in portable gaming. People are resistant to change and I can understand why gamers are rejecting the notion that Apple can be a contender in an already saturated market.
After all, it’s hard enough to keep up with three consoles and all the various portables, right?
Still, there’s so much about the iPhone that makes gaming on it so attractive that I don’t see where the arguments to cover them as part of a gamer’s diet come from. Countless of podcasts, including Listen UP, belittle and set aside any title for it as a marginal note.
Simon Jeffery, formerly President of Sega of America, doesn’t see them as such — evident in him jumping ship to ngmoco last week and, most importantly, developers don’t see them as such when they quit their 2K Australia jobs for the indie scene that the App Store encourages.
Th App Store creates a market where the gamer is in direct control over how applications are priced. There’s a reason why there’s awesome games for cheap and those companies that try to force feed at high costs need to try new strategies to sell their games. For example, Popcap found that their rehashing of Peggle needed to come down $4 (from $4.99) to make a splash on the charts.

The recent OS update’s focus is on making it more gamer friendly but, for the most part, iPhone is already there. There’s a “bone” controller to make it more LEGIT, but the gaming device has already transcended its music and video functionality without it.
Why do you think the iPhone is/is not worthy of the, apparently, coveted “game system” title?

Noby Noby Boy Review (PS3)
Posted by Aaron Mazza in Game Reviews on June 17th, 2009

Do you like the weird and twisted? How about the unique and strange? Well Noby Noby Boy is the perfect game for you. The game is a PS3 exclusive available only via the PSN for a low price of $5. It involves a blob-like creature that eats and stretches to great lengths. That’s about the only thing to do in the game but it does get a little more involved.
Missed E3 Opportunity: Scribblenauts
Posted by Carlos Macias in Nintendo DS, RSS on June 16th, 2009

Considering how much glitz, glamour and towering publisher booths make up E3, it’s easy to see how one can miss out on the small gems. This, no doubt, was aided by the fact that this was my first E3 and I was a mere fly drawn to all the pretty lights.
Some of the biggest buzz coming out of E3 was reserved for a little title known as Scribblenauts. A DS game that’s won a few “Best of” awards — and I missed it.
I love me some original titles and that one seemed to have plenty to spare. The object and scope of the game is incredibly ambitious as it aims to include every noun imaginable…many who tried it failed to stump the game’s vast vocabulary. For every word they put into Scribblenauts, they were rewarded with an accurate representation of it.
Cthulhu? Check.
Vampire to battle it? Check.
Flamethrower? Check.
Keyboard Cat (aka LOLcat)? Check.
Instead of standing in an hour-and-a-half-long line to the God of War 3 demo (which I will 100% buy day one), I could have been playing this little marvel. Oh, well. We’re not too far off from the September 15 release now, according to Gamestop. Sometimes, they are extremely accurate and other times…they pull dates out of their asses. We’ll see which one pans out for Scribblenauts.

E3 2009: Best Booth Babes
Posted by Carlos Macias in RSS on June 13th, 2009
While my main goal for this year’s E3 was to meet as many industry peeps as possible (and play tons of pre-release games), Frankie and my brother, J-Rock, snuck in with a much more noble task: to find the hottest booth babes at the show.
After a couple of years of shunning the tradition to have attractive models enticing gamers to publishers’ booths, E3 higher ups allowed them back in. Here’s how this year’s girls stacked up:

J-Rock’s #3 Pick
Frankie and J-Rock’s #3-5 pics were quite diverse and a formidable task to decide on, but they were quick to agree on the top 2 girls from E3. One was not afraid to jump the gun and the others were looking for Waldo — in skimpy outfits.

Those were just our favorites, though. Look through the gallery below and let us know how wrong we were.

GRADUATED: Can I Haz Job Now?
Posted by Carlos Macias in RSS on June 12th, 2009

Four years after high school and a kid on the way, I finally graduated today for a two-year degree! Well…I’ve been “graduated” since February but today was the official day I could flaunt it, I guess. My degree is in “Behavioral & Social Studies” or something similar that doesn’t really translate to the “market” at the moment. Any suggestions on how I can put my Associates of Arts degree — replacing my lost H.S. diploma — to use?
Education, schmen-cion, I say.

Apple Bottoms: Perfect Baby Gift?
Posted by Carlos Macias in RSS on June 11th, 2009
This past Sunday my girlfriend and I held a baby shower and over a hundred folks showed up. I didn’t know how much you all cared! Or, did you just show up for the free food? Hmmm. Anyway, Ariel and Adrian decided to gift us with quite possibly the most creative baby-preparin’ present of all: Nelly’s own, homemade, and southern brewed Apple Bottoms clothing. Fancy! Apparently, there was a joke in there that I didn’t get…even after it was explained to me :\

E3’s return-to-form show may have ended last week, but we still have things to say about it. Carlos and Adrian bring hands-on reports of Brutal Legend, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, and plenty of other big hitters to the table. Krownz and Aaron give us the “as seen from home” take on the events as they discuss the most exciting news including Project Natal, PSP Go, and Sony’s motion controllers to round out our special E3 blowout episode.

ZEN Pinball Review (PS3)
Posted by Aaron Mazza in Game Reviews on June 9th, 2009

Being a pinball fan, I was eager to download and play ZEN Pinball available on the PlayStation network. After spending some time with it, I can honestly say it’s the best pinball game I’ve played on any console (take that Sonic Spinball). What makes it the best? Glad you asked.
Mirror’s Edge Review (PS3, Xbox360)
Posted by Aaron Mazza in Game Reviews on June 9th, 2009

On a demo interest and cheap sale price, I decided to pick up Mirror’s Edge recently. What can I say about this game that hasn’t already been said? Well, I can say that I hated over half of it and more often than not, I wanted to fling the disc out of the windows. I don’t think that’s been said yet. It’s time to go into detail why I wanted to hold a knife’s edge to the throats of its creators.

J-Rock’s #5 Pick
